NORTH DAKOTA ( KXNET ) — There’s a type of fly that is attracted to the fruits and vegetables in your kitchen and leaving that produce out in the open is what keeps them in your home.

These critters are none other than the humble fruit flies and the way to keep these flies out of your house starts with exclusion and sanitation.

Fruit flies are a tenth of an inch and they can come through window screens, doors, and more.

Preventing fruit flies from entering your house starts with frequently taking out your trash and having a lid on your trash can.

Cleaning out your drains and garbage disposal can also be effective.

But if they already found your house there is a way to fight them off.

“If you have a severe infestation in your house and you’re trying to get them out you can also make a vinegar trap for them, where you would take an empty bottle and fill it with vinegar, traditionally apple cider vinegar because it is sweeter, and a white piece of paper and shape it into a funnel and stick it into there to attract and drown them,” said Emily How, a horticulture agent at the Ward County NDSU Extension.

Fruit flies are not the only kind of flies that can invade your home, fungal gnats can too, and are seen in over-watered houseplants.
