MINOT, ND ( KXNET ) — With school starting very soon, just being able to get to school can be an unexpected challenge for some students.

Bell and Mckinley Elementary Schools closed back in May due to a $6 million budgeting shortfall as well as declining enrollment.

The student body of McKinley will now be absorbed by Roosevelt Elementary for the coming school year.

Students from the now-closed Mckinley Elementary School in Minot will now be able to take some newly created bus routes to get to Roosevelt Elementary.

These new bus routes will have more frequent stops and school officials say safety comes first for the students.

“You’re going to see buses stopping to pick up students and we’re going to have our red flashing lights going on, the stop arm is coming out, which means parents, if they’re driving behind the bus, they have to stop behind the bus,” said Barry Brooks, the director of transportation for Minot Public Schools.

Going around a bus with a school bus stop sign is against the law and can result in a six-point deduction on your driver’s license and a $100 fine according to the North Dakota Department of Transportation.
