MINOT, ND ( KXNET ) — Everyone loves to take their family to the park, but keeping the park beautiful for the public is a full-time job.

With over 40 full-time and seasonal staff, the Minot Park District takes care of 22 community parks.

Duties for park employees can range from anything from cleaning up trash to planting flowers in the parks as well as mowing the grass and taking care of those pesky weeds.

Park officials say that many of their responsibilities extend beyond just taking care of parks.

“We actually do all of the athletic complexes too, so my staff is in charge of the baseball, softball, and soccer complexes too, along with the recreation department staff,” said Shannon Paul, a horticulturist for the Minot Park District.

With over 1,000 people attending events at community parks throughout Minot this summer, the need for people to maintain the parks is at an all-time high. But park officials say they’re fighting more than just being able to get workers.

“We have to work with Mother Nature so weather always throws a different challenge into our daily operations. It could be raining one day, it could be hot and we have to think about heat stress and all these things with our employees being out in the conditions daily,” Paul said.

Minot Community Parks is planning on having recreational sporting events this fall ranging from volleyball to archery.
