MANDAN N.D.– The legion baseball season may be over for the Mandan Chiefs, but their players are still getting recognized. Mason Oster received the North Dakota legion player of the year baseball scholarship.

This scholarship is focused on a player’s connection to their community… it puts a lot of stock into a player’s efforts off the field… and Oster is excited to see that players are receiving more recognition for their work beyond the game.

“It’s always nice to be recognized on the field, but it’s also good to be recognized off the field. This kind of gives you the chance to, you know, show that a little bit,” Oster said. “They don’t get a whole lot of applicants every year, and it’s nice to see that more and more people are starting to apply more frequently. So, it’s nice to see that more people are getting recognized on and off the field. It’s just a nice thing to show progress besides being on the actual field.”

Looking forward to next year… Oster is going to have to take on a larger leadership role with the Mandan Chiefs, but he knows he’s able to look at the framework that was set by the guys before him.

“I kind of look at the guys this year, and I kind of just take things from them, little bits and pieces, and I kind of just make my own plan, like what works, what doesn’t work, what’s worked in the past after just watching games,” Oster said. “Watching these guys it’s just you know what fits your play style, what fits your practice style , what really goes in. I mean it just kind of gauges off the person, but it’s definitely nice to have a couple of my friends, couple teammates back to, you know, kind of help each other out and kind of give each other, you know, some of that advice.”
