WILLISTON, ND ( KXNET ) — A Williston man and a 17-year-old minor have been taken into custody and charged after allegedly trying to break into a Williston police officer’s car.

According to the Williston Police Department, at approximately 3:39 p.m., David Daniel Mendoza Gonzales and an underage male broke into off-duty officer Rowan Horswill’s parked 2006 Ford Mustang.

Another officer soon spotted the men walking away and tried stopping them, after which the two started running down an alley. Police say another man riding an electric bike jumped in
and grabbed one of the suspects until police could arrest him.

According to a second off-duty officer, Mendoza Gonzales was also seen throwing a gun into a nearby park. Police found the gun, and discovered that it was reported stolen in July.

The unidentified minor was found in possession of a bag with what police believe to be marijuana.

When officers questioned the two men, the minor said he rode his bike up to the Mustang and wanted a closer look because ‘It was a nice whip.’

Mendoza Gonzales is charged with three felonies: Attempted Unlawful Entry into the car, Theft by stealing the gun, and Tampering with Evidence by throwing it. He is also facing a misdemeanor charge for fleeing after being told by the police to stop.
