FARGO, N.D. ( KXNET ) – Former North Dakota Senator Ray Holmberg had two of his awards rescinded after he pleaded guilty to traveling with intent to pay for sex with a minor .

Holmberg will lose his Grand Forks Herald’s Person of the Year award, which he received in 2021 for helping secure more than $200 million to benefit various projects connected to Grand Forks. The Herald reported that they have been talking about stripping Holmberg of the award since June.

The Chamber is also rescinding the Henry Havig award, which is considered one of the highest honors a person from Grand Forks can receive for community service. Holmberg received the award in 2020 for his work on many projects, such as securing funding for the water treatment plant.

The now-80-year-old former senator from Grand Forks was indicted in October 2023, after serving more than 45 years in the North Dakota Senate, the most of any state senator in the nation. The maximum sentence for his charge is 30 years in prison.
