BISMARCK, ND ( KXNET ) — The United Way, one of the largest nonprofit organizations in the United States, has more than 1,800 local affiliates that work on various programs to help communities.

Wednesday, The Missouri Slope Areawide United Way hosted its 2024 Annual Day of Caring event. Hundreds of volunteers from the Bismarck-Mandan area helped on various projects throughout the local area. This is the organization’s 25th year of hosting the event.

“It’s just a great time to give back and the impact is far-reaching,” Missouri Slope Areawide United Way Executive Director Jena Gullo said. “So many people, who are in need of food and shelter, clothing. It’s just a time to really celebrate our agencies in this community and the good work they do, every single day.”

For one of those projects, volunteers sorted through used goods they donated and will sell them at a rummage sale on Thursday. The purpose of the rummage sale is to raise funds for the MSA United Way’s “Back Pack Program,” which provides nutritious food on the weekends for local elementary, middle, and high school students throughout the year.

“It warms my heart,” MSA United Way volunteer Amy Hullet said. “I just wish we could raise more. Last year, we raised $5,000 in one day because we just do this in one day. So, I tell everybody, every quarter counts and I couldn’t do it without the help of all these people who are here today because this doesn’t happen by itself. I’d like to beat the $5,000, but again that is only like two weeks worth of food for these kids, so we take donations as well and try to raise as much money as we can,” Hullet said.

“It’s just really important that we can give back to the children. I mean not everybody is as fortunate, so it’s just really important and hopefully a lot of people come out and support this,” MSA United Way volunteer Erin Berger said.

If you want to support the Back Pack program, Hullet said the rummage sale is scheduled for Thursday, August 15, from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. at 1321 Eagles View Place in Northwest Bismarck. All the proceeds collected from the rummage sale will be donated to the MSA United Way’s Back Pack Program.
