NORTH DAKOTA ( KXNET ) — The North Dakota Department of Game and Fish (NDGF) has a program that makes the process a little easier to locate private land open to hunting in the state.

Many sportsmen and women are gearing up for the upcoming hunting season here in North Dakota.

Over 90% of land in the state is privately-owned and this presents a big challenge for hunters to find areas they can hunt on.

NDGF encourages hunters to utilize the Priv ate Land Open to Sportsmen Program (PLOTS), which they started a little over 25 years ago and since then, it has become a popular program.

“It’s really generated another opportunity for hunters to have when they’re out in the field,” said Kevin Kading, NDGF Private Land Section Leader.

Kading says hunters can use the PLOTS program for a planned hunt where they go and find these areas that they plan to hunt on or use it to help them if they just happen to be out and about driving around and find a landowner participating in the program.

The PLOTS program is an agreement between Game and Fish and private owners to allow sportsmen and women walk-in access to hunting on their lands.

In September, they will have a printed booklet available that provides maps for hunters to locate over 700,000 acres of private land open to hunting under the program.

They can also find the guide online on the Game and Fish’s website.

Kading says it’s important that sportsmen read all the rules and regulations of the program and still establish and maintain good relationships with private landowners.

Beginning next month, the printed PLOTS booklets will be available at all NDGF offices or they can pick up a copy from a vendor that sells hunting licenses.
