NORTH DAKOTA ( KXNET ) — Hunters from all over the state are getting ready for the start of hunting season, but wearing the wrong thing could cost you.

Hunters participating in hunting season this year will need to make sure that they are wearing blaze orange.

All bow hunters, as well as youth deer season and muzzleloader season hunters, must wear orange by law when hunting.

How often should you clean these things?

Legal orange clothing is a head covering and outer garment above the waistline of solid orange color, totaling at least 400 square inches.

While some animal seasons don’t require you to wear orange Game and Fish officials say it’s the best option for safety.

“It’s a good idea to wear some orange when out pheasant hunting during the gun deer season or maybe on public land opening weekend when it’s a little bit busier that is always a good idea,” said Bill Haase, the assistant chief in the Wildlife Division.

According to the North Dakota Century Code, big game hunters who do not wear fluorescent orange garments can be fined up to $25 and can be guilty of a class 2 noncriminal offense.
