MINOT, ND ( KXNET ) — Kids are heading back to school next week, but there could be a chance of delay for the students heading to Minot North High School.

Construction of the newest school is nearly complete, with the inaugural year set to start on Wednesday. However, this past Thursday, the building failed its final inspection.

The City of Minot inspectors found code violations with the school’s light safety as well as the school’s fire doors unable to fully open.

Contracting crews have until Monday to pass a new inspection or students won’t be able to head to the new campus just yet. But that all depends on how many violations are found. While the problems are fixable, city inspectors say safety always comes first with any new building.

North Dakota has the strongest sense of community

“That to me is very important for our community, that we know that we can walk through the door of any building and take it for granted that we are safe inside of that building and we can see the exit signs and we can get out,” said Luke Tillema, the building official for the City of Minot.

City inspectors say product availability has also brought its own set of challenges to the project for contractors. And certain areas of the school, including parts of the exterior, won’t be complete until later in the year. But, city officials are confident that the crews working on the school will pass inspection this Monday.

“Get the work necessary done through the weekend by Monday, so they’re fully aware and can make my staff or myself available to go verify that these things have been completed,” said Tillema.

Minot North’s auditorium and swimming pool are set to be finished during the school’s second semester.
