NORTH DAKOTA ( KXNET ) — Earlier this week, the Bismarck-Mandan area was hit with some street flooding after a storm rocked the area.

But the city of Bismarck is warning people that even though we’ve braved the storm, there is another hidden enemy that we still need to be on the look-out for — mold.

Mold develops in moist, warm spaces. According to the North Dakota Department of Environmental Quality, any type of mold can cause health problems, though some types are more likely to cause infections via mycotoxins.

It’s not known how much mold it takes for someone to become sick from mold as it depends on the person and their health. But some groups who can develop the greatest health risks from mold exposure are those who are immuno-compromised, infants and children, the elderly, pregnant women, and individuals with respiratory conditions.

Symptoms can include respiratory problems, nasal and sinus congestion and irritation, eye problems, dry, hacking cough, sore throat, shortness of breath, and skin irritation.

To ensure that your home is mold-free, use a non-ammonia detergent to scrub the whole area and use a stiff brush or cleaning pad for uneven surfaces. Once you’re done cleaning, rinse the area with clean water, then dry it as much as possible. And remember — never mix bleach with ammonia. It’s toxic!
