NORTH DAKOTA ( KXNET ) — The transition back into a school routine from summer vacation can be hard for some kids and families, as it’s a mixture of emotions, schedules, andplenty of unknowns.

Thankfully, a program administered by the North Dakota Health and Human Services (HHS), Parents Lead, has the resources to help parents, caregivers, and professionals support the behavioral health and well-being of kids.

“Going back to school can be a stressful time for children and families,” said the Administrator of the HHS Behavioral Health Division, Sara Kapp. “Whether it’s a child’s first day of kindergarten or moving to middle or high school, we want to help give parents and caregivers simple strategies to help make it a smooth transition.”

Things to do around town: August 19-25

Here are four ways that parents and caregivers can help with the back-to-school transition:

    • Talk about it. Adults can encourage kids to share their feelings about starting school and listen to their concerns, validate their feelings, and reassure them that it’s okay.
    • Set up routines. A steady routine can make kids feel more secure, so try to establish regular sleep times, healthy meals, and times for homework and relaxation.
    • Prepare ahead of time. If there are orientations, go to them so that kids can meet teachers, find classrooms, and get familiar with the layout. If there isn’t an orientation, visit the school beforehand. Families should also practice morning routines, like getting ready for the bus or figuring out the route to school.
    • Encourage friendships. Adults can help kids reconnect with old friends and meet new ones by encouraging face-to-face interactions. Parents and caregivers can also help kids explore new activities or clubs.
