MINOT, ND ( KXNET ) — In a few days, parents will be dropping off their kids for college in the Magic City — but for men and women in one department, their priority is making sure the campus is a safe place for students.

Minot State University’s campus security team keeps an eye on the university grounds, and can respond if needed. That means students can get a helping hand if they need it, such as jump-starting their car, directions if they get turned around, or just having someone to talk to.

Friday is move-in day on campus, but campus security director Gary Orluck says once students unpack, he encourages them to stay in groups.

“We do offer a safe walk program as well,” Orluck states. “If they’re by themselves, they may be uncomfortable walking maybe from the library later at night to their residence hall on campus. They call our security cell number, an officer will respond, and we will walk with them, or give them a ride in our squad car.”

Orluck says campus security can be reached over the phone, and for possible fires, people should call 911.

Meanwhile, there are around 400 surveillance cameras set up around the college campus. Students who may be in trouble can also use one of 25 emergency blue light stations, which alert people nearby if there’s an active threat.

“It’s the deterrent effect,” Orluck says. “Anyone coming to campus thinking they are going to try something theft or some other type of criminal activity that they would know people are watching and there is a way for people to contact MSU security and Minot PD,” said Orluck.

You can reach Minot State campus security at 701-500-2423. The first full day of classes at MSU is Tuesday, August 27.
