BISMARCK, ND ( KXNET ) — North Dakota voters will decide this fall if they want to approve a measure that will restrict how future ballot measures can be approved.

Currently, multiple issues can be included in any initiated constitutional amendments. However, if passed, Constitutional Measure 2 would change that by allowing only one subject per measure. “It’s really not fair to the voters to introduce three or four different subjects in the same measure,” said North Dakota Senate Majority Leader, Senator David Hogue, (R) Minot.

The ballot measure also proposes that all future constitutional initiatives would have to be voted on in both the primary and general election in order to be passed.

Senator Hogue believes that since the North Dakota Constitution is based on the state’s founding principles, he says any future initiatives should go through a more rigorous process to get approved by voters.

“Amending our state constitution should not be a Sunday walk in the park, so we think people should have a chance to vote on it and really decide if they want to pass this and impose this on generations to come,” said Hogue.

Senator Hogue also says that out of 23 states allowing initiated measures on the ballot, 15 already restrict measures to a single subject rule.

With the general election a little more than two months away, North Dakota voters will get to decide whether they agree with Hogue about placing more limitations on approving future ballot initiatives. This year, North Dakota’s general election is on Tuesday, November 5.
