MEDORA, ND ( KXNET ) — There’s no better example of North Dakota’s natural wonders than the Badlands.

With a sprawling landscape of layered rock formations and steep canyons, many people across the state may be tempted to hike these scenic views before the summer comes to a close. But the Badlands Search and Rescue Service warns the public that this natural wonder can often lead to confusion, with hundreds of people getting lost every year in the area.

To prevent future hikers from getting lost in the Badlands’ wandering paths, Search and Rescue has a few tips.

If you’re hiking off-trail and can’t seem to find your way back after some attempts, Search and Rescue says to remember the acronym STOP:

S, standing for stop and stay calm, means to sit down for a bit, take a breather, and avoid panicking.

T, for think, means to assess your situation and the resources you have to remedy it. Think of how you got to this location and any landmarks you might’ve passed.

O, for observe, means to look for any familiar landmarks or signs from the trail you’ve passed.
You can even look at your map or GPS to get a general sense of your location.

And lastly, P, for plan, means to make a decision based on everything you’ve gathered so far from your observations. And not only make a plan, but stick to it. This should include the option to stay put until you know that the route is correct.

And remember: being prepared like carrying a map, compass, or GPS and knowing how to use them reduces your chances of getting and staying lost. Always tell someone your plans before you go on a hike and consider carrying a satellite communication device for emergencies.
