MINOT, ND ( KXNET ) — Kamauri Kennedy, who is just weeks away from being on trial for murder, has now racked up five new felony charges, including attempted murder, on a fellow inmate.

Police say they responded to the Ward County Jail for a report of a fight between two inmates on Thursday evening.

They say when they arrived, they found an inmate, who is referred to as John Doe in court documents, bloody and on the ground being treated by medical and jail staff.

According to court documents, John Doe said Kennedy attacked him, unprovoked, while he was watching TV in the dayroom. Kennedy refused to tell police why he attacked the man.

Officers said video footage shows Kennedy striking Doe up to 10 times. Doe was treated for several puncture wounds to his arms and the back of his head.

Documents also report that Kennedy had contact with someone about the attack, on a jail-issued texting device, before and after the assault. Officers said Kennedy messaged the individual that he was going to “J-Money” Doe and his brother.

According to media outlets in Chicago, J-Money was a local Chigaco rapper who was shot and killed in 2013. Officers said they also found a message sent after the attack, allegedly from Kennedy, to that same individual, that said: “J-Money successful.”

Upon further investigation, officers searched Kennedy’s cell and found several jail-fashioned weapons.

He is charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault, tampering with evidence, and two charges of possession of a weapon by an inmate.

He is set to be in court on October 4 for a pretrial conference for this case.

However, Kennedy is set to go to trial before that, for the murder of 33-year-old Domonique Kelley. Prosecutors say Kelley’s body was found in a burned vehicle in southeast Minot in June of 2021. Police said Kennedy fled the state but was caught in Michigan a few months later, after leading police on a high-speed chase. That trial is set to start on September 18 and is scheduled to last eight days.
