NORTH DAKOTA ( KXNET ) — Vets are urging pet owners to address the alarming rise in pet separation anxiety — an issue that has not improved since the pandemic.

According to a new survey from TrustedHousesitters , one in five people claim they see an increase in their pet’s anxiety, and 25% of owners refuse to travel because of it.

Vets can inform owners how to recognize the symptoms and treatments to ensure a long, happy, and healthy life for pets.

Our furry friends became accustomed to having their owners home when remote work and lockdown measures started during COVID, but now that normal routines are returning, pets are developing separation anxiety now that they don’t have that constant companionship and attention.

The anxiety has an impact on both pet and owner — 59% of owners requested to continue working from home and 17% revealed that they worry about missing out on opportunities out of obligation to care for their pet.

Well-known symptoms of pet separation anxiety include excessive barking or whining, destructive behavior, pacing or restlessness, or attempting to escape.

However, lesser-known symptoms include excessive drooling, panting or trembling, depression or lethargy, reduced appetite, and hiding or avoidance.

Here are five methods for owners to help alleviate these concerns.

North Dakota doesn’t have an NFL team, who do we root for?
    1. Puzzle toys and enrichment activities
      • Provide pets with mental stimulation and distraction while you’re away to prevent anxious behavior. If you’re gone for a long period, you can use a motion-activated or battery-powered toy to keep them entertained.
    2. Calming supplements
      • Talk to the vet about over-the-counter options or prescription medications. Pet-specific CBD has also been proven to help.
    3. Calming music or white noise
      • Music and TV in the background is the most popular way to help alleviate pet separation anxiety. It has a calming effect and meets pets’ sensory needs.
    4. Aromatherapy and essential oils
      • Make sure you use ones that are pet-safe for relaxation and well-being.
      • “The main product that I tend to recommend for anxious dogs is natural appeasing pheromones,” says BVetMed Rebecca MacMillan. “These can act as a calming agent for these animals helping to make behavioral training easier. They are available in different formulations, such as plug-in diffusers, impregnated collars, and sprays for their bedding.”
    5. Exercise and playtime
      • A tired pet is also a happy pet since physical activity can reduce anxiety and improve overall health. Obedience training can also tire them out while helping them feel more confident and secure.
      • “Ensuring affected dogs have a comfortable and secure home environment can help greatly,” said MacMillan. “This includes making sure your dog has a cozy bed in a calm location in the house, access to water at all times, and a consistent routine for the day. This routine should include plenty of exercise and mental stimulation, as a tired dog is usually a happy dog.”
