WILLISTON, ND ( KXNET ) — The Williams County Sheriff’s Office has hosted and conducted its first Corrections Officer Basic Academy class.

After spending several years looking for instructors and creating content to teach at the Academy, Williston welcomed seven Williams County Corrections Deputies as part of the inaugural class.

They completed 120 hours of coursework, covering topics like case law, legal liabilities, and de-escalation techniques, and graduated on Tuesday, August 27.

The ND Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation requires that Corrections Deputies complete the Basic Academy and become certified through the state within one year of employment at a Correctional Center. Before the Academy was offered in Williston, Corrections Deputies had to travel elsewhere in the state to complete it.

Correctional Center leadership plans to offer the Academy in Williston in the future.
