BISMARCK, ND ( KXNET ) — Internet service providers and technology experts discussed ways to expand broadband internet access across North Dakota at BroadbaND 2024, the first ever broadband summit in the state, which was held at Bismarck State College (BSC) on Thursday, August 29.

The internet has become an integral part of life for most people over the past 30 years. However, some still lack high-speed internet connections in some of the most remote areas of the state.

The one-day conference, hosted by North Dakota Information Technology (NDIT), brought together representatives from internet service provides, tribal, and local governments. They shared ideas on improving the state’s broadband infrastructure across all areas of the state.

Roundtable discussions were focused on some of the major federal programs, including the Broadband Equity Access Deployment Program (BEAD), which will help fund expansion of internet service to areas not yet served by broadband.

“These grants are being provided through the federal government to provide broadband service and equity [to all North Dakotans], and to talk about challenges we might face to achieve that goal,” said Brian Newby, NDIT Broadband Program Director.

There was also discussion about making broadband more equitable for people who currently lack access, although they may live in an area that already has broadband internet. Some of those groups include people with disabilities, rural, tribal, and incarcerated populations, as well as the elderly.

“Digital equity includes helping these people use the internet and providing devices that are affordable to them,” explained Newby.

Newby adds that there is a $4 million separate grant to fund the Digital Equity Program, and that it will take several years to complete. He says that when the funding becomes available, it will help internet service providers and telecommunications co-ops expand and improve services in their geographical areas.
