BISMARCK, ND ( KXNET ) — The University of North Dakota and North Dakota State University will be sending their students down under to study Energy Sovereignty for Indigenous Peoples (ESIP).

Every year, six students total will collaborate on year-long research projects, before going with faculty members to Australia for 10 weeks in the summer. There, they will meet research advisors at the University of Adelaide.

Kansas State University and the University of Adelaide, Australia are partnering with the North Dakota universities on this project, and students are also being recruited from tribal colleges and universities, as well as regional, rural non-doctoral institutions.

The objectives of this program are to engage students interested in ESIP with people of Native American and other Indigenous backgrounds, to conduct preliminary research on three ESIP technology areas, and establish research partnerships with the University of Adelaide.

The three ESIP technology areas are as follows:

    1. Power, heat and fuel generation
    2. Power distribution systems
    3. Supply resiliency

This trip will benefit both students and faculty, allowing them to establish international connections as they work to strengthen global aspects of the ESIP center.

Five professors will be leading the program, including UND Chester Fritz Distinguished Professor of Chemical Engineering Wayne Seames, who previously led a program in which students went to England.
