NORTH DAKOTA ( KXNET ) — For National Recovery Month this September, the Heartview Foundation is challenging North Dakotans to stay sober for 30 days straight.

The Heartview Foundation, whose mission is to provide quality treatment and education for people with substance use disorders, is asking people to see if they can go the whole month, Sept. 1 through Sept. 30, without drinking.

They’re encouraging people to note how it affects their physical and mental health, as well as their lifestyle if they’re able to achieve this.

The foundation is also encouraging people to donate $30 to support those in recovery.

It is important to note that drinking dangerously poses greater risks for some groups than others. For instance, people with hypertension, or high blood pressure, are more prone to severe health problems if they drink excessively.

A survey of 3,000 people on MyBioSource.com found that about 40,000 North Dakotans drink dangerously while managing hypertension or high blood pressure. About one-third of adults in the state have hypertension.

North Dakota Health and Human Services (HHS) reminds people to prioritize their health this month and to learn more about the different recovery options available to them.

HHS is also commemorating National Recovery Month by celebrating North Dakotans in recovery and raising awareness about the programs that support them.

Drug Overdose deaths decrease in North Dakota

First Lady Kathryn Burgum, wife of Governor Doug Burgum, started an initiative called Recovery Reinvented, which attempts to end the stigma surrounding addiction so people can get the help they need to overcome it.

“As we celebrate National Recovery Month, I am reminded of the incredible strength and resilience shown by those in recovery, as well as the unwavering dedication of the individuals who support them every step of the way,” said the First Lady. “Recovery is not just a personal journey; it’s a community effort that touches the lives of families, friends, and neighbors across North Dakota. This month, let us all come together to raise awareness, offer support, and ensure that everyone has access to the resources they need to achieve lasting recovery.”

Another program called Recovery Rocks is trying to achieve a similar thing. This HHS program attempts to remind people how important recovery is by having them paint rocks for recovery gardens.

Both the HHS and Heartview want to remind people that if they are in recovery, they don’t have to be alone. This month presents an opportunity for everyone in the community to support them on their journey.

To donate to Heartview for Sober September, go to their website here . Their website says they will send you a small swag item if you donate, along with motivational messages throughout the month.
