MINOT, ND ( KXNET ) — One fire department’s new program has been important in providing emergency care with a swift response.

The Minot Fire Department’s EMS Bike Patrol program helps them respond quickly to any medical calls where trucks cannot get in or access at larger gatherings.

The program has been going strong despite some challenges, such as getting uniforms.

One goal of the department is to educate the public to see the real role of firefighters in the community.

“It’s doing great. The citizens are taking on to it well. A lot of them like seeing us out in public,” said Brad Newman, a senior firefighter for the Minot Fire Department.

The EMS Bike Patrol often goes to larger events all across the Magic City.

During these events, they go out in a team of two and they carry two bags on them.

One is an airway bag that also houses a small oxygen bottle and the other is a bag valve mask for CPR.

“And we also do carry trauma stuff bandages gauze wrap. We do carry tourniquets for if there was a big event and there was a major catastrophe,” said Newman.

The department is also waiting on an AED to add to its arsenal of tools.

Newman says they will have officers patrolling at the YMCA Ruck March coming up this Friday.
