NEW SALEM, ND ( KXNET ) — A vehicle chase early Tuesday morning ended in a police shooting and the death of a 43-year-old Dickinson man near New Salem.

According to the North Dakota Highway Patrol, a trooper attempted a traffic stop at around 12:45 a.m., September 3, on Bismarck Expressway near Washington Street in Bismarck.

The vehicle fled the stop and the trooper started a pursuit going west and onto I-94.

A second Highway Patrol trooper and Morton County deputies joined the pursuit.

Authorities used spike strips to deflate the vehicles tires and the chase ended near New Salem.

At that point, according to the Highway Patrol, the suspect fired on the officers. Two troopers and a Morton County deputy returned fire, killing the driver.

A female occupant in the vehicle was uninjured.

The incident is under investigation by the North Dakota Bureau of Criminal Investigation. The troopers have been placed on administrative leave pending the investigation by BCI and review by the Morton County State’s Attorney, which is standard practice and department policy following an officer involved shooting.
