BISMARCK, ND ( KXNET ) — 773 million people don’t know how to read or write, according to the World Literacy Foundation. That’s almost 10 percent of the world population.

Things most of us take for granted, such as filling out paperwork or texting our friends, are obstacles for those who don’t know how to read or write.

With International Literacy Day approaching on Sept. 8, the World Literacy Foundation has unveiled a tool that can help change that.

The gadget, called a Literacy Pen, is an AI-powered device that can be attached to any regular pen. It allows for the user of the pen to say the word they want to write, and the device will show them how to spell the word.

“In 2025, we aim to equip 200,000 illiterate young adults, including many in United States with this innovative digital learning tool,” said Vanessa Portilla, COO of the World Literacy Foundation. “The Literacy Pen is designed to reduce the digital divide for the most marginalized who struggle to read and write.”

The use of assistive technology in the Literacy Pen can open many doors for those who don’t know how to read or write, allowing them to connect more with their communities and apply for jobs they couldn’t otherwise do.

To celebrate International Literacy Day, the foundation is collecting donations to raise enough funds to try and reach its goal of purchasing and distributing 10,000 Literacy Pens.
