NORTH DAKOTA ( KXNET ) — Many Native Americans call North Dakota home, and there is money to help pay for Native Americans to get an education.

In the spring of 2015, the North Dakota Department of Public Instruction introduced the North Dakota Native American Essential Understanding project.

The project allows students in schools to learn all of their usual academic subjects while gaining an understanding of the traditional ways identified as essential by native elders in North Dakota.

The project’s focus is to increase understanding and appreciation within schools about Native American history. The North Dakota Director of Indian Education says Native American education in schools is important with the high minority population that exists in schools.

North Dakota third worst state in educational innovation

“Native American Students in North Dakota is the highest minority population in this state around 10.5% of our K-12 students are Native American in North Dakota so we really want to be able to provide opportunities not only for educators but also for our students,” said Lucy Fredericks, the director of Indian and Multicultural Education for the ND Department of Public Instruction.

Many folks may not know about education grants that can be awarded to both Native students as well as teachers in North Dakota.

The Director of Indian Education recommends that Natives looking for scholarships apply to the Native American Scholarship Program as there is often more than one recipient.

“But the Native American Scholarship that’s available to students in North Dakota that are enrolled in a federally recognized tribe But they can apply online and it’s up to like $2,000 for undergrad and graduate,” said Fredericks.
