DICKINSON, ND ( KXNET ) — A man is now charged and facing jail time after a violent encounter with police.

On Friday, Daniel Valenzuela was in Stark County court after he was arrested on Thursday in Dickinson.

Police say the incident started when Valenzuela stole a Ruger pistol from a pawn shop and then pointed it at an employee.

They say Valenzuela then ran into a nearby home along 1st Avenue East and wouldn’t come out.

Officers and deputies with the Southwest Tactical and Crisis Negotiations Team then showed up after they said Valenzuela fired rounds at officers.

Police say officers then fired tear gas into the house, and Valenzuela gave himself up.

Valenzuela is now being charged with five felony counts, including robbery, preventing arrest, and illegal gun possession.

Dickinson police say they recovered two guns from the home.

According to court documents, Valenzuela previously pleaded guilty to harboring illegal aliens.

A judge on Friday set Valenzuela’s bond at $100,000. He’ll be back in court for a preliminary hearing on October 14.
