MINOT, ND ( KXNET ) — The Minot Soccer Association is looking for more referees.

The association is looking for referees for all levels of soccer in Minot.

The association’s director, Ellen Jebbens, says this year is the first year Minot High School is relying on referees from Bismarck to fill in for games.

While Minot High School does have seven officials consistently working games, Jebbens says more referees will be needed as the number of kids in recreational soccer has doubled since she started with the organization in 2015.

“We’ve reached record heights of numbers we are over 1,000 kids participating in our recreational programs, with more kids we have more teams, which means we need more coaches which means more games so we need officials,” said Jebens.

To become a licensed referee through U.S. Soccer, you only need to be 13 years old. All referee positions are paid. Jebbens says getting new referees is important for the continued success of Minot Soccer.

“We need to grow that number especially as some of the referees they can’t do it forever or don’t want to do it forever we need to bring in new people to get them ready for when people step away from the game,” said Jebens.
