BISMARCK, ND ( KXNET ) — A Canadian citizen has pled guilty to destroying energy facilities in both North and South Dakota.

On September 11, 2024, Cameron Monte Smith appeared in federal court, where he entered his plea to damaging the Wheelock Substation near Ray in May 2023, as well as a transformer and pump station of the Keystone Pipeline near Carpenter, SD in July 2022.

Nigerian man sentenced in North Dakota fraud scheme

In both instances, Smith attacked the equipment by firing multiple rounds from a high-powered rifle into it, resulting in the disruption of multiple electric services in each state. The damage to the Wheelock Substation and the pump station are both stated to be in amounts exceeding $100,000.

Smith will be sentenced on two counts of Destruction of an Energy Facility — one in each state. He is facing up to 20 years of imprisonment on each count.
