    Two Minot State alumni to be inducted into university’s hall of fame

    MINOT, ND ( KXNET ) — Two alumni of Minot State University will be inducted into the institution’s hall of fame Friday, Sept. 13 at 3 p.m.

    The two inductees are Dr. Vicki Michels from the class of 1988, and Dr. Jacob Schillo from the class of 2015.

    Michels got her bachelor’s degree in psychology from Minot State, and her doctorate in clinical psychology from the University of Wyoming. In addition to being a licensed psychologist, she is the chair of the Department of Behavioral Sciences and Criminal Justice, and is the director of the Addiction Studies Program at MSU.

    Her career accomplishments include:

    • Helping establish Trinity Health Center’s outpatient behavioral health unit
    • Serving as the president of the International Coalition for Addiction Studies Education
    • Serving as the president of the North Dakota Board of Addiction Counselor Examiners
    • Serving as the chair of the National Addiction Studies Accreditation Commission Board of Commissioners
    • Serving on the editorial board for the journal Substance Abuse.
    Start Up Minot business event begins September 12

    Schillo got his bachelor’s degree in biology and chemistry from MSU. Before that, he served for six years as a nuclear weapons specialist in the U.S. Air Force. After graduating from MSU, he pursued a doctorate in genetics at the University of Iowa, where he developed genetic sequencing technology to study cancer evolution.

    Now, he is a scientist at Yale University, studying the mechanisms that drive lung cancer metastasis, and developing regimens to combat the disease.

    Michels and Schillo will join 11 other Minot State hall of famers. The ceremony will be Friday at 3 p.m. at MSU’s Hartnett Hall Collaboration Space, and is open to the public.
