MCHENRY COUNTY, ND ( KXNET ) — The North Dakota Highway Patrol (NDHP) and the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office will be conducting a sobriety checkpoint in McHenry County on September 20.

The goal of the checkpoint is to remove impaired drivers and lower the number of alcohol-related crashes on the road.

“Driving sober is one of the simplest ways to prevent crashes. Impaired driving isn’t just breaking a law; it is endangering lives,” said NDHP Northwest Regional Sgt. Joshua Gudvangen. “Roadways are shared spaces, and everyone should be able to travel without fear of being harmed by other drivers’ irresponsible choices.”

Through Sept. 10 of this year, there have been 65 fatalities in 59 crashes in North Dakota, nine of which involved alcohol.

The sobriety checkpoint will be at a predetermined location in McHenry County on Friday, Sept. 20, and will be accompanied by saturation patrols.

Also, the NDHP says they cancelled the planned enforcements in Grand Forks County that were scheduled for Sept. 6-7.

The NDHP reminds people to drive sober or find a designated driver, share the road with pedestrians, wear a seatbelt, and drive without distractions.
