BISMARCK, ND ( KXNE T ) — No matter what one’s line of work or preference for travel is, many people enjoy having a home to come back to at the end of the day. Over time, though, factors like budget, job opportunities, and weather often cause people to change where they live — and according to recent data, this is even the case in states with a cheaper cost of living like North Dakota.

In a recent study on movement throughout the US, researchers with AgentAdvice looked over data from the 2022 American Community Survey to discover how many individuals moved (regardless of distance) during the year in question. When these results were compared to the total population in each state, North Dakotans were observed to have some of the highest relocation rates in the country.

During 2022, North Dakotans were some of the Americans most eager to leave their current environment in any way — with a respectable 3.5% and 0.3% even leaving the country entirely. This concept is especially clear in the number of residents who were estimated to have moved out of state, which is the third-highest percentage in the nation (fourth if ties are included).

On the opposite side of this coin, those living in New Jersey, Illinois, and California tend to relocate much less, and feature lower rankings in almost every category overall.

“This study highlights the states that people are choosing to leave behind in favor of moving to another state,” says a spokesperson from AgentAdvice. “Whilst the amount of people moving between states is far higher than those leaving America entirely, it still raises questions as to why some states have much higher percentages of people leaving than others. Cost of living is a major factor for most people, especially when looking at housing prices and tax rates. Colorado has high house prices due to its picturesque scenery, which some households cannot continue to afford. Colorado and Idaho have also seen notable population growth in recent years that may be pushing people elsewhere.”

However you don’t mention how many of those who leave, come back. We left Chicago and moved here. Should have done it sooner.
