MINOT, ND ( KXNET ) — Firefighters from Williston are heading to California to help deal with a particularly devastating wildfire.

A three-member crew from Williston’s Fire Department’s Engine 10 will soon be dispatched to help combat the “Line Fire”, which started on September 5th.

California sent a nationwide request earlier this week for help fighting the blaze, which has grown to more than 37,000 acres. Right now it’s threatening over 65,000 structures, with evacuation orders being issued in several communities.

Are North Dakotans ready to relocate?

Corey Johnson, the WFD’s Assistant Chief of Operations, says they’ll be using some of their equipment specifically designed to fight wildfires in challenging environments — and that the team is prepared to work with firefighters in California.

“You just have to get use to the changes in the terrain, changes, in the weather, changes in the elevation, and stuff like that. But I’m fully confident our crews will be able to integrate well,” said Johnson.

The Williston crew is expected to be gone for the next two weeks, and perhaps longer — as they could be re-assigned to other hotspots in the state as needed.
