WILLISTON, ND ( KXNET ) — Williston emergency services are typically associated with major problems like crimes and fires — but occasionally, police officers and firefighters will join forces for a different yet still very important situation. On Sunday, September 15, the two organizations worked together to rescue a furry friend who was stuck in a tight place.

According to the Williston Fire Department, at approximately 12:54 p.m., the Williston Fire Department (WFD) received a request to assist the Williston Police Department (WPD) with an animal rescue attempt, after the police received a report about a cat stuck in a storm drain. Upon the arrival of a fire truck and medical truck, a WPD officer told responders that he had tried to rescue the cat, but it responded by running deeper into the drain.

WFD crews were able to enter the area, isolate the cat between two sections of drain pipe, and successfully remove the animal. After examination, the cat was revealed to have a microchip implant. A WPD Animal Control Officer was able to obtain the owner’s information from this chip, and the two were reunited without any further issues.

The Williston Fire Department classifies itself as an ‘All-hazards’ fire department, which means they are trained and equipped to respond to multiple emergencies (such as the release of hazardous materials, natural disasters, and vehicle extrication among others). In the past week alone, they have responded to 107 calls for service — including ambulance work, wildfires, medical emergencies, long-distance hospital transfers, and motor vehicle collisions.
