NORTH DAKOTA ( KXNET ) — There’s a new public health warning from the surgeon general, but it’s not tobacco or alcohol, it’s parenting.

According to an advisory titled Parents Under Pressure, the Office of the Surgeon General says that 40% of parents say that on most days, “they are so stressed they cannot function,” and roughly 50% say that stress is “completely overwhelming.”

The data, which was taken from the American Psychological Association and other sources, builds a case that parents are facing more stress than ever before.

The findings declare parental stress as “an urgent public health issue.”

On a 10-point scale, 33% of parents rated their stress as an eight or higher. And 40% say they are “ so stressed they feel numb .” Yet another 60% said that stress makes it hard for them to focus. Finally, 66% of parents are simply consumed by money woes.

In every case, parents, including working parents, report higher rates of stress compared to non-parents.
