BISMARCK N.D.– After USA Volleyball launched their new ‘try volleyball’ program, designed to introduce kids to volleyball without a large money or time commitment, the Green Wave volleyball club got an offer to host one of the clinics. For the President of the club, Trinity Turnbow, it was an easy decision.

“Once we got the memo from USA Volleyball, our board got together and we talked about, do we want to do this? What do we want to do with this? And we decided right away unanimously, we voted to put on this day for everybody,” Turnbow said. “We’re all a bunch of coaches that love the game of idea and we just wanted to give back to the community and have a free day for everybody.”

The choice to put the clinic on was made even easier, as the Green Wave volleyball club had plenty of volunteers already lined up with the Bismarck State College Mystics volleyball team, and their head coach Kyle Kuether, the club director of the Green Wave Volleyball Club.

“We have a roster of 16 at BSC and all of them are here. Some of them are here in this session, some of them are coming to the next session and some of them are coming to the third session,” Kuether said. “So all of our BSC players are helping today, which again is just a great way for them to get into the community, for the community to get to know them a little bit and to hopefully kind of, you know, make a little bit of connection between us and them, especially for the girls that maybe don’t live in Bismarck, that don’t really know a lot about the community of Bismarck, just kind of an opportunity for them to get out and show their face a little bit.”

“We all grew up playing the sport,” said Taryn Sieg, a BSC volleyball player and volunteer for the event. “so it’s really cool to be able to give back to the community and kind of help this younger generation just, I don’t know, find the same love for the sport.”

They reached a lot of the younger generation, over 100 kids signed up for the event, and a whole different demographic was introduced to the game.

“It’s just, you know, something fun for the kids to do. But yeah, just kind of get out and try volleyball. We have five boys signed up, which is awesome,” Kuether said. “I think there’s a lot of boys in North Dakota that want to play, but we don’t obviously have it as a high school sport yet. They can play club volleyball, but it’s just not super popular right now, so hopefully it’ll kind of gain a little popularity. But yeah, it’s awesome to see the five boys and then obviously very cool to see all the girls that you know might be here for the very first time.”

Turnbow knows this event, and all the ‘try volleyball’ events across the country last well beyond just one day.

“Starting young like this with volleyball. I think it really just grows the sport in our community. And I think hopefully the kids find something they can be a part of. And volleyball’s a team sport,” Turnbow said. “So that gives them the, you know, the opportunity to be a part of a team and work together towards a common goal. And I think that’s a great thing to start young “

Green Wave volleyball couldn’t run this event on their own. They also got help from a local high school.

“St. Mary’s donated the gym time for us today, which really helped us put this free clinic on,” Turnbow said. “So I just want to say thanks to St. Mary’s for for doing that for us and our club and these kids in our community.”
