    Korean War veteran and prisoner of war Vernon Huber dies at 96

    MANDAN, N.D. ( KXNET ) — Col. Vernon Huber, a Mandan native who served in the U.S. Air Force for 25 years, has died at the age of 96.

    According to the Weigel Funeral and Cremation Service, he died September 14th at his home in Mandan.

    KX News was honored to cover his story in 2021 when he finally achieved his dream of leading Mandan’s Independence Day Parade.

    He became a prisoner of war in 1952 when his jet was hit by ground fire during the Korean War, forcing him to eject from the aircraft. For our full story on how he survived through that experience, click here .
