MINOT, ND ( KXNET ) — The Civil Air Patrol (CAP) is looking for new members to join their ranks.

The Magic City Composite Squadron will be holding an open house at Avflight at 2400 North Broadway in Minot on Saturday, September 21.

The event will run from 10 a.m. until noon and will showcase all the different roles and responsibilities of the CAP for those who are possibly interested in joining.

The Commander of the Magic City Composite Squadron says the open house is a great way for the public to learn about all the functions of the CAP.

“You’re probably thinking of the emergency services. That’s where we do the search and rescue, the disaster response, such as aerial photography that will help us mitigate times of flooding, things like that we also have aerospace education both for cadets age 12 and up as well as adults,” said Major Jeffrey Slocum, the commander of Magic City Composite Squadron at the CAP.

You can be as young as 12 to join the Civil Air Patrol cadet program, where cadets can choose to be a part of the aircrew or air-ground search and rescue.

Cadets or any senior members over the age of 18 can even receive flight training from skilled pilots as members of the CAP.

Slocum says the open house is a great way to see if CAP is the right fit for those who have an interest in aviation.

“It’s a great way to get to know some of our folks. There’s a lot of camaraderie that you will see around. Hopefully, we will have an aircraft on display and you will be able to see some of those things that are added to the aircraft to help us find missing persons,” said Slocum.

To join, you must first meet with your local CAP Composite Squadron Commander and fill out an application, as well as attend three CAP weekly meetings. Meetings are held every Tuesday from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
