BISMARCK, ND ( KXNET ) — As the summer ends, so too do the “100 deadliest days” — the time between Memorial Day and Labor Day, when accidents are far more likely to occur on the road. However, deadly crashes are always possible, and the harsher weather of fall and winter means that it’s even more important to be careful when driving. But are there certain other days where fatal collisions are more common?

In a study on crashes and weather across the United States, injury lawyers with Anidjar & Levine used fatal collision and weather data from the NHTSA to find out which days of the year can be considered the most “dangerous.” Here, it was discovered that the end of September is a far deadlier time for drivers on the road than the rest of the month, at least as far as weather is concerned.

According to the study, September 22nd is the most dangerous day of the month to drive, as an average of 51 fatal crashes occurred throughout the nation on the day. It should be noted, however, that September’s deadliest driving period is still far less dangerous than other months, especially during fall. On average, a single day during the season included 51 fatal crashes during the years in question — and certain periods, like those in late October or early to mid-November, feature much higher collision rates.

“As the summer draws to a close and the days begin to get shorter,” states an Anidjar and Levine spokesperson, “visibility on the roads naturally worsens. Similarly, we see an uptake in heavy rain, snow, fog, and wind, all of which can make the roads more perilous.  To stay safe during poor fall weather, it may be necessary to turn on your headlights a little earlier than you’re used to and change to snow tires with better grip. Decreasing your speed, even on roads you know well, can also give you more time to respond to weather changes or other distractions. While it can be frustrating to travel slower, doing so will help to ensure you arrive safely at your destination.  If you’re concerned about the weather and the safety of the roads, avoid making unnecessary journeys, and check the forecast before you travel.”
