MINOT, ND ( KXNET ) — Educators in the South Prairie School District are reminding folks to slow down when going through a school zone.

While many schools throughout North Dakota have a reduced school zone speed limit of 20 miles per hour, many schools like the South Prairie School District, are next to major roads where speeds can reach up to 70 miles per hour.

According to the Transportation Research Board, 25,000 children are injured every year by speeding vehicles, and more than 100 are killed from being struck by a vehicle in a school zone.

South Prairie Principal Darwin Routledge says speeding to get where you’re going, especially in a school zone, just isn’t worth it.

“You’re going to get to where you’re going five minutes earlier why put kids in danger by driving 70 miles an hour by a school you know those are the things I think about,” said Darwin Routledge, the principal at South Prairie High School.
