BISMARCK, ND ( KXNET ) — More than half of motor vehicle fatalities in North Dakota in 2023 resulted from lane departure-related crashes. As such, the North Dakota Department of Transportation (NDDOT) would like to remind drivers of the importance of being vigilant on the road and making sure they stay within their lane while driving.

Single-vehicle lane departure crashes, which happen when a car crosses the edge or center line or leaves the roadway entirely, are a leading cause of severe injuries, often because of high speeds.

As part of the Vision Zero strategy to reduce the number of crashes with serious injuries or fatalities, North Dakota will continue to install safety features like wider edge line pavement markings, curve warning signs, and cable median barriers, which all have proven results. Drivers are also reminded to wear seat belts, use proper child safety seats, obey all speed limits, and drive sober and distraction-free.
