MINOT, ND ( KXNET ) — 7.7% of North Dakota’s population is made up of veterans and 5.8% of them are living in poverty. That’s according to Veterans Data Central. That’s why organizers are bringing back the 13th annual North Central Veterans Stand Down, to Minot in October.

The Stand Down is being held on the 17th at the Armed Forces Reserve Center. The event aims to connect current and former service members and their families who are struggling, with housing and resources to get back on their feet. There will be 50 resource vendors, including the Fargo Veterans Association, which is there to answer any questions about health care and benefits. Military Outreach Specialist Kelli Weiand says this event started with an idea to help Vietnam vets, but has since expanded to all branches of the military.

“The Stand Down was started to address homeless issues with that era of veterans. For us of course, here we do focus on our homeless veterans, but like I said, we do open it up to anyone who has served and current service members,” Military Outreach Specialist Kelli Weiand said.

Weiand says 189 veterans attended the Stand Down last year. But more veterans are expected to be at this year’s event as it has continued to grow. Weiand says that the Stand Down is a way to serve those who have served us.

“They have done a lot for our country, they have done a lot for our community, and it’s just a way to show them that they’re appreciated, and a way to connect them with help if they need it,” said Weiand,

Flu shots and a free meal will be given out at the event. You don’t have to be registered to attend. Organizers will help attendees register when they arrive.
