MINOT, N.D.– After failing to qualify for the state tournament a year ago, the Minot North girl’s golf team has come back this year hungrier than ever. The Sentinels were able to place second in this year’s WDA Tournament, which would earn their team a spot into the state tournament.

The Sentinels were able to place in the top 3 of each meet this season, and before the season got underway, Coach Delorme said that him and the girls knew that they could be a top three team in the region, and that it’s been kind of fun to feel that pressure under the gun.

“We actually had a really good season. We had some heartbreak at the end of last year. We missed qualifying for state by one stroke as a team. So, I think the girls came back a little bit more hungry this year and we established right way at our preseason that we thought we could be a top 3 team in the region”, said Head Coach Michael DeLorme.

“It’s pretty amazing, last season we took 7th at regionals and going from 7th to 2nd feels pretty amazing. It feels great all the work we’ve put in. Every tournament we’ve come top 3. We wanted to win but we’ll try to beat Mandan at state”, said Carlie Brown.

The Sentinels will enter into the state tournament as the number 8th team in the entire state, and although the Sentinels missed first place at the WDA tournament by just one point, Minot North’s Emersyn Kopp and Kinzy Welstad were able to finish 1st and 2nd individually.

“I think I defiantly played some type of leadership on this team we all have really. Throughout the end of the season, I was putting up some good scores and I gained some confidence and going into the West Region tournament, I really set a goal that I wanted to win and I was able to do that even through the tough conditions and yeah the Vardon tournament was good too”, said Emersyn Kopp.

“It’s been really exciting seeing us getting better throughout the season, and I defiantly think we push each other. We’re both competitors and I’m just excited for state”, said Kinzy Welstad.
