GRAND FORKS, ND ( KXNET ) — The University of North Dakota will have a grand opening for its National Security Corridor Monday, October 7th, and many government officials could be at the event.

UND President Andrew Armacost will lead the ceremony, which will feature a formal ribbon cutting, a reception, and tours of the corridor. Grand Forks Mayor Brandon Bochenski and members of the North Dakota Legislature representing the Fargo and Greater Grand Forks regions are also expected to attend, according to the university.

UND is inaugurating its National Security Corridor as part of the university’s initiative to advance research, education and workforce development in fields such as Space Studies, engineering, and unmanned aircraft systems (UAS). The corridor — housed on the first floor of Harrington Hall — will feature laboratory and classroom space to further each of those initiatives.

Following the grand opening of the corridor will be an open house at the university’s nanofoundry, located in UND’s Tech Accelerator building. The nanofoundry will make materials for applications critical to national security, such as quantum computing, cryptography, intelligence gathering, and secure communications.

The grand opening will be Monday, Oct. 7 at 3 p.m., followed by an open house at UND’s nanofoundry from 5-6 p.m.
