BISMARCK, N.D. ( KXNET ) — Nobody is talking about snow just yet, but Bismarck workers are planning for colder days with a fun competition.

The city of Bismarck hosted its equipment operator ‘Road’-eo at the Bismarck landfill on Wednesday. Road supervisors set up three obstacle courses for workers to complete, including driving a plow truck, a motor grader, and a loader.

The course is meant to give workers more practice before they start getting sent out for snow removal this winter. Around 50 city and Burleigh County workers signed up for the challenge, where they’re scored on their time and how many cones or obstacles they hit.

“A lot of times we don’t get in this equipment for six or seven months, and it’s a good training course for our new employees,” Bismarck roads and streets crew lead Chad Schiermeister said. “I think we got eight or nine new employees this year, so, it’s just something that we do for those guys to get used to some of the stuff. The obstacle courses are kind of tight, so they got to get used to working around cars and tight areas around the city of Bismarck.”

Supervisors are tallying up the scores, they’ll announce the winner in each category.
Schiermeister says the top finishers get their name on a plaque, and the overall winner will receive a winter coat.
