MINOT, ND ( KXNET ) — One bank is making a difference in its community, but it’s not the first time, or even the first year.

First Western Bank is now in its sixth year of its volunteer days.

Bank employees volunteer their time helping out various organizations with different tasks like pulling flower beds, helping out at Souris Valley Animal Shelter, and serving clients of The Lord’s Cupboard.

“They were taking care of the clients as they were coming through. One was helping out with the bread, the others, they were giving them the different food choices all the way through,” said Mary Nester, the Wednesday Floor Manager at The Lord’s Cupboard.

Bank marketing and communications specialist Danielle Rued says giving back through their volunteer time is something they really encourage and enjoy doing.

“Being a community bank, one of our main things is really giving back to the community, and it’s not always monetary donations. Sometimes hours speak louder,” Rued said.

Rued says the community has been so excited about volunteer days as well.

“And the non-profits, they are just so appreciative of it because they don’t always have as many hands to help them all the time, so if they can get a big group of people to help them further their goal and their mission, they appreciate it so much,” Rued said.

Mike Elm with First Western Bank was one of the many volunteers making downtown look beautiful.

He shares what he enjoys about volunteer days.

“What I like about volunteer days is getting an opportunity to get out. First of all, get out of the office, number one, and also get out and just see people and see what the community of Minot is about,” Elm said. “What is going on around the community of Minot and also what you can do to help the community of Minot, make it a better place to live.”

Making their community a better place to live is a feeling that far surpasses having a lot of money in the bank.

Volunteers will be helping out the Matthew 25 project Thursday.
