MINOT, ND ( KXNET ) — An Indigenous Peoples’ Day Intertribal Powwow is taking place at one university on Monday, October 14.

The Minot State Native American Cultural Center and Club and the MSU Diversity Council are hosting the event from 4-8 p.m. in the Hartnett Hall Collaboration Space, just south of the MSU Dome.

The City of Minot signed a proclamation in 2020 that recognizes the second Monday of October as Indigenous Peoples’ Day.

Things to do around town: October 7-13

“In 2019, Minot State University Native American Club students held information panels and met with MSU faculty, staff, and students about recognizing the second Monday in October as Indigenous Peoples’ Day,” said Minot State Native American Center Director, Annette Mennem. “In Spring 2020, a resolution was prepared by students to request the City of Minot to recognize this day as Indigenous Peoples’ Day. On Oct. 5, 2020, then-Mayor Shaun Sipma signed the proclamation, and since that day, the University celebrates and honors Indigenous People.”

This is a non-contest powwow and is free and open to everyone who wants to attend. You can find more information about it on Facebook .
