NORTH DAKOTA ( KXNET ) — A Tokio woman has made her initial appearance in federal court after being indicted on multiple charges, including Involuntary Manslaughter and Child Neglect.

According to the U.S. Department of Justice, on August 17, 2024, law enforcement officials responded to a residence in Fort Totten where an adult man was pronounced dead. An investigation revealed that he had been struck and run over by a motor vehicle driven by a 30-year-old Tokio woman.

The indictment alleges the woman was under the influence of intoxicating liquor at the time, and in possession of a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia. In addition, she was driving recklessly without due care for the rights and safety of others, and had three minor children in the vehicle at the time.

The suspect is facing one count of Involuntary Manslaughter and three counts of Child Neglect. The case is currently being investigated by the FBI, with assistance from the Bureau of Indian Affairs.

An indictment is not evidence of guilt. The defendant is presumed innocent unless or until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt at a trial.
