GRAND FORKS, ND ( KXNET ) — University of North Dakota students are working with the UND’s Department of History & American Indian Studies to commemorate Grand Forks’ first 150 years.

The project involves creating a book of 150-word essays to commemorate the city and its history. So far, the first 50 essays have been written by students, faculty, and other members of the community.

Associate Professor William Caraher and Assistant Professor Nikki Berg Burin, both from UND’s Department of History & American Indian Studies , said much of the city’s early historical accounts were narrow in terms of the perspective they were told from.

“They focused a lot on all the great men who came to the prairie to do great man things like founding cities, piloting steamboats and building railroads,” said Caraher. “That seemed a little dated to us because that’s just not the narrative many of us in the community can relate to any longer. There are so many more stories to tell.”

“ Grand Forks at 150: The First Fifty ,” which is the collection of the first 50 essays, is now available on The Digital Press.
