MINOT, ND ( KXNET ) — An animal shelter is facing overpopulation from man’s favorite feline friend.

The Souris Valley Animal Shelter in Minot has been serving as a high-impact shelter for both dogs and cats since 1978.

But shelter staff say they are now worried about space as the cat population has nearly doubled since last year.

Shelter staff tell KX News that they have had to take in more litters of cats that are not properly spayed or neutered.

And, according to ShelterAnimalsCounts.org , this has been an ongoing trend around the country as the cat population has increased by more than three million in the last year, across animal shelters nationwide.

“We get intake all the time from everywhere and it’s mostly animals that are found or lost and we take as much as we can from the pound or anywhere else and as long as we have the space, we try to save as many animals as we can,” said Haley Burchett, the communications specialist at Souris Valley Animal Shelter.
