WILLIAMS COUNTY, ND ( KXNET ) — Once again, scammers have been trying to get personal information from residents in our area.

According to the Williams County Sheriff’s Office, people in the county have been reporting callers requesting personal information for a variety of reasons.

The Attorney General of Texas says there’s a number of tactics scammers can use to steal your information, such as promising money from a loan or lottery, saying they need money or personal information for a loved one who is an emergency situation, needing money for a debt that doesn’t exist, and more.

To spot a scam, the Attorney General says to look out for the following signs:

    1. They contacted you.
    2. They usually dangle some sort of bait or reward like money.
    3. They want your personal information.
    4. Usually, you have to pay them first.
    5. You have to send them that money through a wire transfer or gift card.

If you believe you’ve been targeted by a scammer, Williams County Sheriff’s Office advises that you call their non-emergency line number at 701-577-7700 or contact the Williams County Dispatch Center at 701-713-3355.
